What are the requirements to become a professional truck driver?
The Department of Transportation has a list of requirements that must be met by all individuals before they become a professional truck driver. These include:

- Must be at least 21 years old to drive across state lines.

- Must be a U.S. citizen and able to speak English.
- Must have a valid driver's license from the state in which you reside.
- Must pass the DOT physical exam and drug test.
- Must obtain a CDL (commercial driver's license).

Furthermore, most individual Georgia truck driving companies will have their own requirements that employees must meet.

How do I obtain my Georgia CDL?
To get your CDL, you must take the Georgia CDL test, which consists of a vision exam, written test, and a driving test. You should be able to take both the vision exam and written test at your local DMV or driver's license office. The driving test can be completed at one of four specific locations throughout Georgia: Thomson, Gainesville, Jackson, or Milledgeville.

You must also fill out the two-page CDL application and provide a recent photograph of yourself.

Do I have to attend driving school to get my CDL?
Attending driving school is not a CDL requirement; however it is highly recommended that you do. Driving school can give you the proper training and guidance needed to successfully pass the CDL test and get a good truck driving job.
